How to Choose a Pilot Training School

Whether you’re learning to fly for pleasure or as a career, becoming a pilot requires a commitment of time and money. The school and instructors you choose will play an important role in your training.

Here are a few suggestions for finding flight training in Scottsdale that will meet your objectives.

  • Visit schools that interest you to discuss their training programs and the syllabus they use.
  • Talk to the flight instructors about their training and experience.
  • Look for a certificated flight instructor (CFI). (Click here to meet the Sierra Charlie Aviation team.)
  • Ensure that the instrument instructor has an instrument instructor rating (CFII).
  • Ask other students about their experiences at the flight school.
  • Take a demonstration flight to get acquainted with the instructor.

Look for an instructor who demands perfection and is safe, organized, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic about your training.

Another important factor to consider is the flight instructor’s personality. You’ll spend a lot of time in a small cockpit with this person, so you’ll want to be compatible.  If you have a laid-back personality, an instructor with a drill sergeant approach will most likely be a poor match for you.

Take a Discovery Flight

If you are new to aviation, the best way to decide if flying is for you is through a Discovery Flight. This is essentially a standalone lesson and will give you first-hand experience in the pilot’s seat. It also counts toward the minimum requirements for your license.

One of our highly qualified FAA Approved Flight Instructors will discuss how the aircraft works and take you through a pre-flight briefing. Then we’ll take off and give you a chance to take over control of the aircraft.
