Learn to Fly Mesa, AZ
If you live in or near Mesa, AZ and are eager to learn to fly, consider Sierra Charlie Aviation. Our program enables you to learn in the single-engine Cessna Skyhawk 172, the industry standard for professional flight training.
Sierra Charlie Aviation’s home base is located at Scottsdale Airport (SDL), a tower-controlled airport with an 8,249-foot runway that serves corporate aircraft. Our location provides quick and safe access to local practice areas and nearby airports and is convenient for students in Scottsdale, Mesa, Phoenix, Tempe, Glendale, Chandler, and beyond.
We are a FAR Part 61 aviation school with a training team comprised of highly experienced Certificated Flight Instructors (CFIs). These exceptional instructors, combined with our Cessna-approved computer-based curriculum, will help you earn your wings more quickly than a FAR Part 141 school because we offer one-on-one instruction that can be customized to fit your schedule.
Sierra Charlie Aviation’s high-caliber flight training program has been honored with AOPA Flight Training Excellence Awards as one of the top flight schools in the country.
AOPA also recognized owner and Chief Flight Instructor Scott Campbell (CFI, MEI) as the Best Flight Instructor in the Southwest Region and Senior Flight Instructor Tom DeYoung (CFI, CFII) as one of only three Distinguished Flight Instructors in the region.
Who Can Become a Private Pilot?
To become a pilot, you must meet these FAA requirements:
- Be at least 17 years of age to obtain a license (but can start training earlier);
- Be able to read, write, and converse fluently in English;
- Pass a routine medical examination;
- Receive and log ground training from an authorized instructor;
- Pass a multiple-choice written knowledge test;
- Receive a minimum of 40 hours of flight instruction and solo flight time (FAR Part 61) or 35 hours (FAR Part 141);
- Successfully complete a checkride, which includes an oral and flight examination given by an FAA inspector or Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE).
Take a Discovery Flight
If you are new to aviation, the best way to decide if flying is for you is through a Discovery Flight. This is essentially a standalone lesson and will give you first-hand experience in the pilot’s seat. It also counts toward the minimum requirements for your license.
One of our highly qualified FAA Approved Flight Instructors will discuss how the aircraft works and take you through a pre-flight briefing. Then we’ll take off and give you a chance to take over control of the aircraft.
